Grim Sickers 26/01/2019

We caught up with the UK Grime MC Grim Sickers in the middle of his recent UK tour with The Streets.

Grim Sickers is a name that needs no introduction when it comes to the UK Grime scene. The Swindon born MC has collaborated with P Money, JME, Jaykae and more recently Mike Skinner and Chip alongside appearances on Charlie Sloth’s highly respected ‘Fire In The Booth’ show. His influences come from the original Grime scene of the early noughties merged together with US Trap repping’ the different sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. Now into their last day of a trio of live shows at Manchester’s iconic Apollo venue, Grim Sickers, The Streets and The Manor will then be heading to Newcastle, Sheffield and Bournemouth, finishing off with 5 shows at the 02 Academy in Brixton.

Our latest podcast installment also comes courtesy of Grim Sickers featuring tracks from Lil Peep, Bones, Riff Raff ft Lil Tracey, Chief Keef, Playboi Carti and The Streets, mixed together by TAY.

So first of all tell us how you first got involved in the scene and where it really took off?

I got involved in the scene by finding out about Grime in its very early days especially with the Wiley b2b Dizzee Rascal with DJ Slimzee sets. I’m from Swindon and they used to hold the Sidewinder event there so I got to see all the MC’s in their early stages. I was underage at the time around 14/15 years old and right in the mix of the crowd!

Your tune with Mike Skinner & Chip is currently sat at 1.6 Million views, big up you guys, how you feeling about it?

I feel the song is a mix of 3 generations and eras of musicians. I also feel the song is very ahead of its time and will be around for a long time. The beat produced by Mike is amazing too!

The last few days you guys have been touring Manchester, do you think there’s still a big difference ‘up North’ as oppose to London with regards to the urban music/grime scene?

I defo feel like up North have it large! I loved Leeds and Manchester they were really up for it. I think everyone is excited that we’re all on tour giving a real once in a life time experience to the real Streets fans.

Which other producers/artists will you be working with for 2019 and any more plans for a JME collab?

I really want to work with Jaykae in 2019 that’s it from that genre, but I’m loving the emo rap thing at the moment so I want to work with Lil Tracy, Bones and Riff Raff.

What’s your favourite sneaker styles or streetwear brands at the moment and why?

Anything OFF-WHITE right now. I’ve got a pair of the OFF WHITE x Nike Air VaporMax trainers but I’m too scared to wear them haha! But then obviously Supreme, Trapstar and Nike with all black being my style.

Any plans to hit the States with your sound/tours etc for 2019?

I’ve actually just come back from a mini tour of USA with Mrshl. I went to Miami with American Grime, Boston , LA and San Fran. It was was amazing! I’m heading back to Miami with American Grime again in March 2019.

Some of your favourite all time UK Grime/urban/hip hop artists and why?

Wiley because he has done everything and still going. He always feels he hasn’t done enough and I love that about him. Also his honesty on social media is amazing. Also Chip is amazing and a great all rounder and defo has longevity too. I’m so happy I worked with him!
